What this means

TDS compliance begins before payment. Identify the nature of payment, the payee status, the event that triggers deduction, the applicable section and whether a threshold or exception applies. For events on or after 1 April 2026, the Income Tax Department’s current guidance points users to the Income-tax Act, 2025 framework.

Practical points

The second control is master data: PAN, residency, declaration/certificate information and lower-deduction orders should be centrally maintained. A rate-only calculator cannot determine these facts and should never be used as the sole basis for deduction.

Control and documentation

After deduction, reconcile the amount to the ledger and challan, deposit within the applicable time, file the statement, and review defaults or mismatches. Corrections should be documented rather than repeatedly edited without an audit trail.

Before you act

At year end, reconcile the TDS ledger, challans, statements and certificates. This reduces avoidable notices and helps ensure that payee credits are reflected correctly.
