What this means
GSTR-3B is a summary return, so errors can be easy to hide inside totals. For monthly filers, the GST Portal identifies the 20th day of the succeeding month as the general due date, subject to extensions. Quarterly filers under QRMP generally use the 22nd/24th state-group schedule.
Practical points
Before filing, reconcile outward liability to GSTR-1/1A, input tax credit to available portal data and the purchase register, reverse-charge items, blocked credits, reversals and electronic ledgers. Investigate large month-on-month movements.
Control and documentation
Do not assume auto-populated data is automatically correct for the taxpayer’s books. Portal information is an input to the reconciliation, while eligibility and classification still need to be evaluated under the law.
Before you act
Document the final bridge between books and return. This becomes especially valuable during annual return preparation, departmental queries or internal review.
