What this means

Advance tax should be managed as a rolling forecast rather than a four-date reminder. Begin with estimated annual taxable income, remove expected TDS/TCS and other eligible credits, then compare the resulting liability with the cumulative instalment requirement.

Practical points

At each instalment date, update the forecast using actual year-to-date results. One-off capital gains, bonus income, changes in business margins or large deductions can materially change the annual estimate. The website planner applies the general 15%, 45%, 75% and 100% cumulative schedule; special categories and exceptions must be checked separately.

Control and documentation

Maintain a bridge between the previous forecast and the revised forecast. This makes it clear whether a higher instalment is due to better business performance, a new income event or a tax-position change.

Before you act

Interest exposure should be reviewed when an instalment is short. A timely forecast discussion is generally more useful than discovering the shortfall at return-filing time.
